I am a board member of crossingthresholds.org, a non-profit that builds and operates 5 elementary schools in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. I will be on a trip to the schools in January along with about 20 others on our semi-annual trip where we work to provide education, food and hope to our 1300 + students. Providing entrepreneurial education and support to the kid’s mothers would be a great next step and I’m hoping I might connect with BOMA when I’m in Nairobi in January to discuss this. Pls advise if this might be possible. Thanks-Dave Squier, (Ketchum part-time resident, friend of the Ullman’s)
Perry, if you are not corresponding with Shoshana Stewart (an American), runs Turquoise Mountain (TM), an NGO working to drive regeneration through an artistic revival, in Afghanistan and beyond. I highly encourage you to get in touch with her. She's a force of nature and is very good at what she does.
TM has an effective model for giving women a path to financial agency and Shoshana. Her husband, Rory Stewart (British) and is a former MP. King Charles III who set up the project originally and it was run by Rory until Shoshana, who went to Afghanistan as a volunteer, took over as President of the NGO. Actually, I'd be surprised if you have not met Shoshana:
You are so right about the effect of Micro lending orgs and the ripple effect they have through communities. I've read about it before, and am always amazed how effective it really is..
interesting to me, it almost always is Womans groups doing it!
Are men too locked in to the idea that you have to leave to find a real wage?
Where we work sadly you do need to leave to find a real wage. Bringing livelihoods beyond subsistence agriculture to the last mile is a real challenge. Just for clarification, BOMA does not do micro lending. That is not available to populations not educated enough to be able to keep the records necessary. They do lend amongst each other but only to people they know. We teach the participants how to run a small business, but the real value is encouraging women who were never told they were capable of anything that they are far more capable than they know. We are just a catalyst that helps them unlock their potential.
When our best and brightest choose to make a difference in the lives of marginalized and struggling populations, the world becomes a much better place.

Keep fighting the good fight. Cheers.

I had to add that any society in which the word "woke" is a pejorative has a serious, serious problem:

Hello there
You are so right about the effect of Micro lending orgs and the ripple effect they have through communities. I've read about it before, and am always amazed how effective it really is..

Incredible, impactful, impressive and inspiring. The numbers of people you impact and BOMA’s growth with you as chair is extraordinary. KUDOS 🙏🏻 Laura
Inspiring to see the softer side of you, Perry.....good on ya!
